Introduction to UNIX

Duration: 3-5 days

Audience

System and application end-users who have little or no experience with the UNIX Operating System. Application support personnel, such as database administrators and 4GL programmers, who need a functional familiarity with basic system tools and commands.

  1. UNIX Concepts and Basics

  2. UNIX Files (manipulating and printing files, directories)

  3. Shell Basics (history, alias, environment variables)

  4. Using the Korn/Bourne/C Shell Note1

  5. UNIX Processes (ps, nice, and kill commands, process scheduling)

  6. The vi/emacs/ed Editor Note1

  7. UNIX Data Tools (grep, sort, sed, find, etc)

  8. UNIX Productivity Tools (mail, news, calendar, at, cron, write)

  9. Operating System Fundamentals Note2

  10. Using Graphical User Interfaces Note2

  11. Introduction to Korn/Bourne/C Shell Programming Note1 Note2

  12. Using TCP/IP Note2

  13. Introduction to Selected User Applications Note1 Note2

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to write Bourne Shell scripts using the following features:

Instructional Technique

Students are invited to bring their current ideas and questions to the classroom for discussion. Case studies, lecture, group problem solving, and online laboratories will be used. Students will be encouraged to enhance their skills utilizing the techniques presented through classroom problem solving and controlled online workshops.
