Individuals who are responsible for the day to day administering of the AIX Operating System.

2. AIX Concepts and Basics (logging in, basic commands, changing the password)

3. AIX Files (permissions, directories, printing files)

4. Shell Basics (overview, history, aliases, variables)

5. Using the Korn Shell (I/O redirection, background jobs, startup files) Note1

6. AIX Processes (ps, nice, and kill commands, process scheduling)

7. The vi Editor Note1

8. Introduction to Korn Shell Programming Note1

9. AIX Data Tools (grep, sort, sed, find, others)

10. AIX Productivity Tools (mail, news, calendar, at, cron, write)

11. Introduction to System Administration [overview, startup, shutdown]

12. System Management Tools [SMIT, ODM, lsdev, cfgmgr]

13. System Administration Tasks [user/group and device management]

14. AIX File Systems [disk space allocation/concerns, techniques]

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

• Use commands to manipulate files (including using the editor)

• Navigate through the file system,

• Manage processes,

• Customize the system environment, and

• Use system management tools to:
  • Partition disk space,

  • Load software,

  • Add new users and devices, and

  • Properly start up and shut down the system.

Instructional Technique

Students are invited to bring their current ideas and questions to the classroom for discussion. Case studies, lecture, group problem solving, and online laboratories will be used. Students will be encouraged to enhance their skills utilizing the techniques presented through classroom problem solving and controlled online workshops.

Prerequisites

None.
